Laurent, for what is worth it, intention with spaces is widely accepted as 
the sanest possible option in whitespace significant environments.. The 
spared few bytes simply aren't worth the hassle at all.

Consequently, this option isn't well tested, but sure, this bug needs 
fixing.

BTW, vim comes with a usable whitespace conversion via ":set ts=4",
":set et" and ":retab".
