[Eric] eric4 refuses to be backgrounded

I'm not sure what you mean, but here's the exact reproduction:

1) from an X/gnome/whatever terminal, type

eric4 &

2) the splash screen / logo shows up

3) the splash screen stops at the "Generating user interface" step (and freezes)

4) pressing enter at the terminal, bash tells you

[1]+  Stopped                 eric4

5) by typing "fg", the splash screen shows a few more steps, then the
full IDE shows up

OK. I'm no Qt expert, but I could try a few more diagnosis steps.
