Fine for commercial products. But I am in academia, my code is freely
available, and I must keep support to a minimum because I have to do
it all by myself.

At the moment the only uncommon library that my code requires is the
netCDF library. Consequence: 20% of all support questions are about
netCDF installation problems. And netCDF is simple to install compared
to Qt and PyQt.

Therefore what I'd like to see is

- binary versions for as many platforms as possible
- encouraging Linux vendors to include Qt and PyQt in their
  distributions
- work harder on upwards compatibility of new versions
