There might be two differences between your example and mine.
#1 You are using Python 2.2.2, I'm running 2.3.2
#2 (Which I suspect is the culprit) I am using the Windows versions of 
PyQt (3.8) and Qt (2.3-nc)

There's probably some funkiness that happened when the newest version of 
PyQt was released.
I'm going to try and build a fresh copy from source today and see what I 
come up with.
