[QScintilla] Why doesQScintilla not work in debug?

After some experimentation, I found that QScintilla is hard-coded for a
release build?

Why is this? How is one intended to debug an application that uses
QScintilla?

The error I kept running into before this was QWidget: Must construct a
QApplication before a QWidget
